One study found that the rise in off-site offices coincided with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chriswestfall\/2020\/05\/20\/new-survey-shows-47-increase-in-productivity-3-things-you-must-do-when-working-from-home\/#5644d25b80dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47% increase in productivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in early May, Gallup noted that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/311561\/employee-engagement-continues-historic-rise-amid-coronavirus.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38% of workers in the US reported feeling \u201cengaged\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their roles \u2013 the highest percentage since the survey began in 2000. Research shows that workers reporting higher levels of engagement are more likely to stay, attract new customers, and treat existing customers very well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if employees don\u2019t need to be in the office to work effectively, do they actually need to be in the same country? The technology enabling companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/05\/12\/twitter-says-staff-can-continue-working-from-home-permanently\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take their teams off-site can also be used to facilitate international employment. Enterprises can hire foreign workers without asking them to relocate or even step foot in the country. And for some, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2016\/03\/holoportation-and-virtual-immigration-will-transform-the-global-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtual immigration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d has been a reality since long before the pandemic.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrtechradar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRTechRadar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/anitalettink\/?originalSubdomain=nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anita Lettink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been working in the HR-tech space for around 20 years, a large portion of which, she says, has been spent managing global teams and customers \u201cfrom anywhere.\u201d Her belief is that the global pandemic has given many organizations the push they need to start hiring based on talent rather than location like such innovative companies as Basecamp and InVision.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are going to start asking their managers, \u2018Why do I need to sit in traffic every day for two hours when I can just be as productive at home?\u2019\u201c she says. \u201cAnd if that\u2019s accepted, it increases the possibility of opening up hiring to people around the world. After all, if you work from home, you\u2019re not in the office. So what does it matter where that home is?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Anita doesn\u2019t believe virtual immigration will overtake location-based hiring any time soon, adding, \u201cWe predict that the future of work will involve a mixed setup of on-site and remote workers.\u201d Because while remote collaboration does have its benefits, there are still some obvious limitations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-fb546d3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"fb546d3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fb82e26\" data-id=\"fb82e26\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-300a226 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"300a226\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The challenges of working remotely<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b2bea6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b2bea6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one thing, to manage a virtual team, leaders require new skills, explains Anita. Not only must they excel in setting clear milestones and deadlines, but they also need to manage end-results and outcomes, and be very hands-on throughout the journey. Not everybody is good at that. So company heads really need to think about how they can enable their managers to become virtual leaders.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, employee health and wellbeing can be difficult to manage from home. When employees work away, it can be tricky to assess how they\u2019re doing. With their avatars, users can explore these online spaces and meet other people as they would in person without leaving their homes. Not only will it increase competition for job seekers, but it might see companies lose their inhibitions when it comes to employing off-shore talent willing to do the same work for less. No doubt, new hurdles will inevitably appear as governments step in.
